Proverbs 17: 17 reads:
A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity .
I have pondered over this scripture often. The first part is really self-explanatory. Most of us have friends who love us in spite of our shortcomings. When we are down and out, depressed - we call our friends. But what happens when the friend tires of answering the phone at 2 AM or taking you to the grocery store when your car is down...The second portion of this scripture states that "a brother is born for adversity." Adversity is defined as "a state of hardship or affliction; misfortune; a calamitous event." We are assigned to our biological brothers and sisters, as well as our spiritual siblings, to come to their rescue. Hmm...We were born for that purpose according to that scripture. We are to assume the role of rescuer when our "brothers and sisters" are in trouble. How many times have said-"I feel sorry for so and so..." but never made the effort to see what "I" could do? We call them our brothers and sisters. Our purpose has been given. Have you checked on your natural and spiritual siblings today?

You are so right. We do need to not only take care of and check on our "real" family and friends (which are often closer to us than family is); but also on those that are just acquaintances. It's too easy to turn the other way and walk away from them as opposed to turning thier way to truly look at them and help them. Many are not looking for help or sympathy. However, to empathize and work with them instead of for them often works better not only for them, but for you as well.
I think that these blogs in some way are our own way--through the "magic" of technology--for checking up on our cyber friends. We may not teach together in the same building or even the same district. However, we are all kindred spirits in our love for our students and teaching them what we can. So to all of my cyber friends/classmates, how are you really doing today? As for me, I can barely bear the thought of opening our next workshop assignment. I can't say that I'm even close to being comfortable with this last lesson!
Thank you for your verses. They are great thought provoking verses that we take for granted. Also, remember that to look at it differently, your brother may not be the one causing adversity. You may be the one making the waves!
